Men with brooms – sweeping? People throwing rocks
at houses? What is this sport, you are asking?
Perhaps you saw the demonstration at the Winter Carnival.
To the adventurous spirits who were our
Club’s first “official” curlers…a
special thanks to Bruce and Barbara Bracken, Allie, Jules
and Julian
Baretta, Charlie and Corinne Florentino, and Annie Banks.
Hopefully, there will be scores of additional
members getting involved in this exciting new sport at
the Club in the near future. This is a sport that
all family members can do together! We even have special
lighter rocks for youth curling.
We are scheduling a series of “Learn to Curl”
clinics during March and April, taught by “real”
curlers. These clinics are free to members - of all ages.
We will provide all the equipment. All you need to bring
are clean rubber soled shoes and comfortable, warm clothing.
Space is limited and the sessions will be filled on a
first come, first serve basis. We need to know how many
members are interested in participating so that we can
accommodate everyone. Please respond to curling@ihwinterclub.com
and let us know if you are interested. Click
here for more info on the "Learn to Curl" clinics.
We are also planning ahead to next fall. Our vision is
that we would like to have weekly curling games
and additional “Learn to Curl” sessions on
a monthly basis. What we ultimately do is highly dependent
on the interest that is generated this spring. So PLEASE
do respond if this is of interest to you.
We are looking for volunteers for our new IHWC “Curling
Committee”. This is a chance to learn about
curling at an accelerated pace by helping out with the
organizing of clinics, ice preparation and many
other fun tasks. This is another great way to get involved
with your club.
For those of you aren’t sure about curling just
yet, or who just want to watch, there are about 80
hours of curling being broadcast from February 16-27th
on NBC and its affiliates. Learn about curling
strategy, advanced sweeping techniques and cheer on your
country of choice at the same time. This is
one of the only Olympics sports that you can learn in
30 minutes and then go right out and do.
If you have any questions, feel free to email curling@ihwinterclub.com,
and someone will get back to
you.
